Janet Blackman

April 26, 1928 — January 11, 2025

Buffalo, OK

Janet Louise (Ashcroft) Blackman was born April 26, 1928, in Central Falls, Rhode Island. She left her earthly home on January 11, 2025, at the age of 96 years young, and without a doubt, heaven is a bit more lively and fun with her there. She was the third child born to Lewis James and Grace Ethelwynne (MacMillan) Ashcroft, joining older sister, Ethelwynne and older brother, Bruce. Younger sister, Joan (Adams), came along after Janet. Her early years were spent in North Smithfield, Rhode Island. After graduating from Blackstone High School, she received an Associate’s Degree from the Rhode Island School of Design, Providence, RI. Later, she moved to southern California, working in the offices at Naval Base San Diego. On October 22, 1960, she married Jay E. Blackman and lived in Lincoln, Nebraska, for most of her adult life. Janet was a talented artist, spending many hours painting original portraits and scenes. Treasured family pieces include a portrait of her mother, Grace, along with the Adams’ farmhouse northwest of Buffalo, and her brother-in-law Don gathering cattle. In addition, Janet loved collecting art and sculptures meaningful to her. She loved to travel and did so extensively. Some of her many trips included Europe, particularly loving Paris and Venice, and South America, where she toured the Panama Canal and visited Machu Picchu. She also loved Hawaii and enjoyed taking many cruises. Janet dearly and passionately loved animals, especially her pets. She worked at the San Diego Zoo during her time in California, and later with the local zoo in Lincoln, Nebraska.

In 2011, Janet moved to Woodward, OK, to be closer to family. She so enjoyed her lunches and dinners with her friends and her Sunday School class at the First Baptist Church. For the last three years, she resided at Western Skilled Nursing Home in Buffalo. Janet embraced all aspects of life and friendship with happiness, joy and such fun. She lit up a room, bringing laughter and brightening the day of every person who crossed her path. Janet is survived by her sister, Joan Adams, and husband Don of Buffalo, OK, along with family and friends.

An uplifting celebration of Janet’s life will be held on her birthday, April 26, in Buffalo, OK. Additional details will be shared at a later date. A private burial service will occur with Wilkinson Funeral Services in Buffalo, OK, handling arrangements.
